The Speechify Alternative for Voiceovers

Speechify sells three products: a reader app for listening, Speechify Studio for voiceovers and a developer API. Lazybird is one studio for voiceovers, voice cloning and an API on one account. We tested Speechify Studio's Free plan on November 7, 2026: Lazybird has monthly plans from $9, gives more than four times the audio for about half the yearly price, and clones voices on the Free plan.

Where Lazybird is better

Exactly Where Lazybird Beats Speechify

Each point below comes from our own test of both products on November 7, 2026.

Pay monthly, or yearly for less

Speechify

The Studio pricing page lists yearly plans only: $100 or $300 paid upfront.

Lazybird

Creator is $9 a month or $49 a year; Pro is $19 a month or $99 a year.

More audio for the money

Speechify

Studio Starter is $100 a year for 86,400 credits, which Speechify equates to 24 hours of voiceover.

Lazybird

Creator is $49 a year for 500,000 characters every month: 6 million a year, over 100 hours at the pace we measured.

Voice cloning in the studio

Speechify

We found no cloning option in Speechify Studio. Cloning is sold with the API, from $10 a month.

Lazybird

Free clones up to 3 voices from a 10–30 second recording, for the studio and the API.

Higher-resolution downloads

Speechify

Our Studio Free download was an MP3 at 24 kHz and 64 kbps.

Lazybird

MP3 downloads at 48 kHz, plus WAV, OGG and MP4 video export from the studio.

One account for studio and API

Speechify

The reader app, Studio and the API are separate products with separate plans.

Lazybird

The studio, the API and AI-agent tools share one account and one credit balance.

Where Speechify Is Better, and Who Should Switch

Speechify is better if you:

  • mainly want to listen. The reader app reads PDFs, books and web pages aloud on your phone or computer. That's its core job, and Lazybird isn't a reading app.
  • are a developer who fits in its free API tier: 500,000 characters a month with commercial use.
  • want dubbing or AI avatars in the same studio. Speechify Studio spends the same credits on both.

Lazybird is the better fit if you:

  • make voiceovers for videos, courses, ads or audiobooks and want to pay monthly;
  • need more than 24 hours of audio a year;
  • want to clone your own voice;
  • want a PDF, EPUB or Kindle book as an MP3: Lazybird imports them and exports the audio, so you can listen anywhere.

How We Tested

On November 7, 2026 we used Speechify Studio's Free plan and Lazybird, generated the same 393-character script on each, and copied prices from speechify.com/pricing-studio and speechify.ai/pricing that day (US dollars).

Lazybird Speechify Studio
Voice Elyssia (official voice) Beatrice
Download on Free MP3, 48 kHz MP3, 24 kHz mono, 64 kbps
Voice cloning Yes, 3 voices on Free No option found in Studio

Speechify's hours come from its own pricing page, where 1 credit is 1 second of voiceover. Lazybird's hours use the pace we measured with our official voices: the 393-character script ran 25.6–28.7 seconds, about 820–920 characters a minute.

Voice cloning is AMAZING

“The program itself takes a few tries to get used to. I was really interested in the voice cloning. One five-minute audio of me reading a book and BAM! minutes later it was loaded. I played with the expressiveness and speed and I CAN'T BELIEVE IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE ME!!!!! You can do multiple clones, so I am going to make a recording for different genres. This is over the top exciting. THANK YOU!”

Makes creating podcasts easy

“Lazybird uses your scripts (dialogues) to create voiceovers. The voiceovers can be one or more persons, though I only created two-person podcasts, a host and a guest...”

Awesome: Effortless Script Handling

“I have tried several systems before, and I can confidently say this is the best for long scripts. I even used it for a long audio script that lasts around 75 minutes.The great thing is that you just need to bring the text and paste it in the first section; the system will take all the script, no matter how long, and just past it, and it will divide it into sections. There's no need to copy one paragraph or sentence at a time...”
